Trains from Nantes

Nantes has one main station, Gare de Nantes (also called Gare de Nantes-Sud), located centrally near the Jardin des Plantes. It handles TGV high-speed services, TER regional trains, and Intercités routes. The station connects directly to the city's tramway network, making onward travel straightforward. Most long-distance and regional services depart from here.

TGV high-speed trains from Paris Montparnasse to Nantes typically take around two hours and fifteen minutes to two hours and thirty minutes. Service runs frequently throughout the day. Booking earlier generally secures better fares. The route is direct with no changes required, making it one of the most convenient ways to reach Nantes from the capital.

There is no direct train to Mont Saint-Michel. The typical route involves taking a TGV from Nantes to Rennes, then a regional bus or shuttle onward to the mont. The full journey generally takes around three to four hours depending on connections. Check current schedules through the booking widget, as bus connections may vary seasonally.

Nantes is well connected by TER regional trains to destinations along the Loire Valley and the Atlantic coast. Saint-Nazaire, La Baule, and Angers are all reachable within roughly an hour. Trains to the wine town of Muscadet-producing areas south of the city are also quick. A regional rail pass or carnet of tickets can reduce costs for multiple trips.

Advance booking is strongly recommended for TGV services, as fares increase closer to departure and popular routes sell out, on Fridays and Sundays. Tickets typically open around three to four months ahead. TER regional trains generally do not require advance booking and can be purchased on the day of travel at the station or via the SNCF app.

SNCF trains do not have strict luggage weight limits. But you are expected to manage your own bags. Each passenger can bring two large bags and one piece of hand luggage. There are overhead racks and designated luggage areas near doors on TGV trains. But space fills quickly on busy services. Arrive early to secure storage space near your seat.

Nantes Atlantique Airport does not have a direct rail connection. The most common link is the airport shuttle bus, which runs to the city center and Gare de Nantes. The journey takes roughly twenty to thirty minutes depending on traffic. A tramway extension to the airport has been discussed but is not currently operational.
